Yes, you read that correctly: ten years. eBay was created in September 1995, by a man called Pierre Omidyar, who was living in San Jose. He wanted his site – then called ‘AuctionWeb’ – to be an online marketplace, and wrote the first code for it in one weekend. It was one of the first websites of its kind in the world. The name ‘eBay’ comes from the domain Omidyar used for his site. His company’s name was Echo Bay, and the ‘eBay AuctionWeb’ was originally just one part of Echo Bay’s website at ebay.com. The first thing ever sold on the site was Omidyar’s broken laser pointer, which he got $14 for.The site quickly became massively popular, as sellers came to list all sorts of odd things and buyers actually bought them. Relying on trust seemed to work remarkably well, and meant that the site could almost be left alone to run itself. The site had been designed from the start to collect a small fee on each sale, and it was this money that Omidyar used to pay for AuctionWeb’s expansion. emails ... but if nobody sees them you are simply spinning your
wheels. It all comes back to the famous question, "If a tree falls in
the forest, and no one is there, does it make a sound?" Your websites

* Optimism – eternal optimism is the fuel that can drive you to

business owners. Always see the glass as half full, make that full
(half with water, half with air) and you have given yourself a great

* Consistency – the top people in any field always practice their
craft. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Pele did not rise to the top
of their respective sports by practicing when they felt like it.
Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand did not become megastars by
showing up for rehearsals when they were in the mood. They decided
what they wanted and consistently worked at it. The same is true with
your home business.

* Energy – couch potatoes rarely become proficient at anything other
than the remote control. Successful home business owners are willing
to do whatever it takes to reach to the finish line. They understand
that balancing their life is also important, so they must have the
energy to drive their business and also spend quality time with family
and friends. Working overtime is not uncommon on your way to the top.

The wonderful thing about a home Internet business is it provides a
level playing field. Anybody can succeed, as long as they are willing

If they're educated about the new benefits resulting from health care reform, they may be more open to changes in their current coverage, such as increased cost-sharing or the adoption of high-deductible plans and Health Savings Accounts.

In some states, it is illegal to ask specific questions about an employee's health status. So, to safely help yourself understand their coverage preferences, create an anonymous survey for your employees to fill out. Ask them to identify the kinds of benefits they most value. It may be, for instance, that they don't value dental coverage as much as prescription drug coverage. By making the survey anonymous, you can stay on the right side of privacy considerations and get a more honest account of what's important to your employees.

TIP #3 -- Encourage employee wellness -- Wellness is always a good strategy because small group health insurance policies cost less when you have a healthy group. Encourage employees to exercise at lunch and stock your break room with healthier snacks. Encourage preventive medical care too. Many small employers don't have human resources departments, but there are online resources available that advise people when to get scheduled screenings and check-ups.

If you've already purchased a post-reform health plan with improved coverage, encourage your employees to take advantage of the preventive screening benefits that are now available with no out-of-pocket cost. Preventive screenings and regular checkups can go a long way towards helping you ensure a healthy workforce and minimizing sick days in the future.

TIP #4 -- Shop and re-shop -- Whether or not you're currently struggling under the cost of group health insurance, it can pay to shop around and explore new options. Re-shopping at least once every year or two (in the same way you might for automobile insurance) can help you save money and feel confident you're getting the most out of your health insurance dollars.

These guidelines are for 2010; with health reform, this coverage gap will begin to close every year until it is closed entirely by 2020. Some good news for this year, though: in 2010, under reform, if you reach the Donut Hole, you will receive a one-time $250 rebate check if you are not already receiving Medicare Extra Help. These checks began being mailed to beneficiaries in mid-June 2010.

To help you with the donut hole in 2011:

Consider plans offering gap coverage.
See if your medications have generic alternatives.
Use mail-order for discounted medications.

In addition, current enrollees should review the new Part D plans because many are available with lower cost sharing, premiums and/or deductibles. A plan with basic benefits may give you the coverage and the peace of mind that you need at a lower premium.
Each insurer decides how to set the premium for its Medigap policies by community rating, issue-age rating or age-attained rating. How the premium is set will affect how much you pay now and in the future.

5. Don’t get caught paying a Medicare enrollment period penalty. It is important to note when you must sign up for Medicare Parts A, B, and D. In some cases, if you do not sign up within the proper time period, you may have to pay a penalty. To avoid paying penalties, take the following steps:

For Medicare Part A (Hospital), contact Social Security three months before you turn 65, and if you need to sign up for Part A, do so when you first become eligible during the Initial Enrollment Period.
For Medicare Part B (Medical), don’t forget to sign up during the Initial Enrollment Period.
For Medicare Part D (Drug), join a Medicare Part D plan when you first become eligible, and do not go more than 63 days in a row without a Medicare drug plan or other creditable coverage.

10 Costly Mistakes That Seniors May Face During Medicare Annual Enrollment Period

The plan that my have seemed perfect when you signed up might not covered your needs for next year. Avoid making these errors:

Missing the "fine print": Not reading the fine print in your annual plan Notice of Change about which benefits have changed and which have remained for your plan can be costly.
Going on auto-pilot: Not doing anything and simply auto-enrolling in the same plan is a potential mistake. Many plans change cost and drug coverage annually. What worked last year for you may not work with the same plan this year and could cost you money in terms of higher prescription drug costs and other out-of-pocket expenses. Changes in medication usage can also change what plan offers you the best economic value.
Stable premiums = stable coverage: Just because your Medicare Advantage or Part D premium hasn’t gone up doesn’t mean that you are getting the same plan for the same price next year. Deductibles, co-pays and prescription drug coverage are just a few of the benefits that may have changed. Research and find out what the total out-of-pocket cost will be for this plan.

Not getting a second opinion: By not shopping around and seeing what other plans are out there, you may be costing yourself more money in 2011. This is an important decision, so take the time you need to make the right choice and understand all of the options available in your area.
Extended care: Don’t assume nursing home care is a covered benefit—it is not. Medicare does not provide coverage for custodial care, assisted living facilities or long term care. However, skilled nursing facilities may be covered following a related hospital stay.
My drugs are covered: Don’t assume your doctor knows what is in your network or what prescriptions are in your formulary. You can enter your current medications on a website like http://www.PlanPrescriber.com to see which drugs are covered on your current plan and compare the projected costs with other plans available in your area. You can print out this comparison and take it with you to see the doctor. Make sure your doctor knows your in-network labs, physical therapists, or durable medical providers.
Medigap has me covered: Don’t assume Medigap plans will pay claims that Medicare won’t. Medicare only pays for medically necessary claims. If Medicare doesn’t pay either because the service rendered is not "medically necessary" or a Medicare covered benefit, neither will the Medigap plan.
I’ll qualify: Don’t assume you will automatically be accepted in a Medigap plan outside of Open Enrollment or Guaranteed issue qualifying events. Medical underwriting does occur.
I’m covered worldwide: Don’t assume Medicare covers you when traveling outside of the United States. Medicare will not pay any medical claims outside the US and its territories. However, certain MediGap plans might extend emergency coverage outside of the US.

What type of research do you have to do? What questions
should you ask?

" How long has the company been around?

" What is the product?

" Is the product unique?

" Does the product have mass appeal?

" Is the product a front runner in an emerging market?

" Can you become passionate about the product?

" Does the business have a powerful marketing system in
place?

" Who are the successful people in this business?

" What are the successful people doing to create that
success?

" Is the product something that the majority of the public
can afford?

" Am I personally financial stable enough to start a new
business?

" What type of a monthly marketing budget will I have to set
aside to be successful?

" What are the conversion statistics for the marketing
process?

" Is the business truly duplicable?

" What would be my break even point?

" Is there a way to make money quickly with this business or
is there a way that I can create a quick income in
marketing
this business?

" Etc.

You see it's not just the opportunity that has to be
correct. You TOO have to be correct for the opportunity and
you have to be in a financial position to take advantage of
the opportunity at hand.

Way too many times I see people joining my business that
jump in on a hope and a dream.

They have barely enough money to pay for there monthly
membership commitment and yet they still want to know the
fastest way to grow their business for FREE.

When people get caught up in the emotion of opening the
possibility for more in their life sometimes they don't
think clearly. They think if they can just get themselves in
they will get rich.

It's not just about getting yourself in.

It's about getting yourself in and putting yourself in a
position to be able to fully maximize the opportunity at
hand.

I get asked the following WRONG question all the time.

"How long until I make money?"

It's not about how long until you make money it's about what
you have to do to make money.

The truth is you could put yourself in a profitable
situation tomorrow or today, but it would take resources and

The truth is, the fast way is never the FREE way. It's
either going to take you a good deal of money to put
yourself in a profitable position or a good deal of
education and leverage, and most of the time both.

Here it is:

On the surface, network marketing companies appear to be
thriving communities of consuming customers all happy with
the product that they are consuming and they really are, but
what drives that community of thriving consumers has
absolutely nothing to do with the product itself.

Let's think about this statement.

Let me ask you a question:

Why did you decided to get started in a network marketing
business?

You don't have to say anything out loud but answer this
question in your head right now to yourself.

I guarantee you answer is somewhere along these lines "Well,
I started my business because I wanted to make some extra
money and who knows maybe even become financially free."

Am I right?

Well let me ask you another question now.

When you prospect and talk to leads about your business what
do you talk to them about?

Most likely you try to stick to the corporate script which
inevitable ends up with your prospect asking you questions
about your network marketing companies products or services.

And by the end of the conversation you've lost control of
the call and both you and your prospect end up confused
(usually get somewhere between details about your companies
product or service and the compensation plan).

You get of the phone and hope that my some grace of god your
prospect you paid $5 to confuse will decided to join your
business.

Likely story!

Here's why:

Successful Network Marketing has NOTHING to do with selling
your prospect on your product at ALL!

To the contrary, the only thing that you should EVER talk to
your prospect about is the same thing that got you sold on

dreams and honestly, if you're looking for business builders
to recruit into your organization your prospects hopes and

downline to do all the work so you don't have to.

The simpler and more effective the marketing system plus the
strong the training your company provides the easier your
system will duplicate.

If you want to think about it in its most simple form, your
company's real product is its duplicability.

If you find a system that is easy to duplicate and you can
have your prospect "sell themselves" on their financial
dreams you will have a highly successful network marketing
business.

Your Job is Simple:

Find people that want to attain financial freedom your way
and then shorten their learning curve so that they can go
out and do the same.

2010 has been an exciting year at Worldprofit. As the year winds down we review some of the services released this past year to our valued Members. As we look forward to 2011, we express our appreciation to the 850,000+ Members who have joined the Worldprofit Home Business Network.

Over the past year our focus has been continuing to provide Members with free and low-cost services to increase the value of the Worldprofit Membership. We understand that the success of our Members requires ongoing specialized training, tested tools and up-to-date resources to help generate traffic, sales and income sources. In listening to our Members, you told us you wanted easy-to-use automated gizmos and gadgets to build traffic. You wanted proven strategies for making sales. In these tough economic times, you told us you wanted more ways to earn from home from trusted reputable sources. To that end, in 2010 Worldprofit released a number of new Member services. NOTE: Members, if you missed any of these tools, you can access them all within your Worldprofit Member area.

Search Engine Optimization and Strategy is a complicated process to the new marketer. Mistakes can be time-consuming and costly. We researched a number of tools to make SEO easier for our Members, and added:

At the time of writing this, Members can access over 200,000 free Ad credits at a variety of websites all targeting the Home Business market. We also expanded our list of recommended Advertising sources for paid or for credit based advertising.

To help you have a number of trustworthy income sources we expanded the 20+ Income Sources. We also introduced the Money Makers Program. This has proven extremely popular and we plan to add companies, products and services over time.

New commissonable business-building services were added that included: CPanel Hosting and Plugins (Hosted Blogs, Classifieds, Forums, Articles, News)

Recognizing some shortcomings in our Autoresponder System, we upgraded the system to add more automation and pre-built sequences. We included this upgraded version of the Autoresponder System in the Platinum VIP Membership at no extra cost.

Article Marketing is a powerful way to generate content and get backlinks to your site. The problem for most people is where to find unique content. Worldprofit CEO and best-selling author, Dr. Jeffrey Lant came to the rescue! He has been writing brand new articles and releasing them every few days for the exclusive use of Worldprofit Silver and Platinum Members. One of the reasons for the success and popularity of the the Worldprofit Home Business System is due to a number of elite Members who have qualified to be part of our 24 Monitor Network. Under the experienced hands-on supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Lant, we have watched people from all walks of life with little or no sales experience learn how to make offers and close sales. You can't learn this stuff in school! We teach what we ourselves have tried, tested and evaluated in our own daily online activities. LIVE training will continue and George Kosch's bootcamp sessions will be recorded for the convenience of all Members.

We are doing a complete revamp of all Silver and Platinum Design Templates to introduce more user options including integration of social networking, layouts, videos, products, etc. The goal is to bring the templates into current industry standard, offer more choices and functionality for Silver and Platinum Websites. This will also include expansion of the current Content Management System to accommodate design upgrades and provide user friendly update options. All this will be implemented pain-free. Members need not worry that they must be an advanced site designer or developer to use and benefit from these changes. We are keeping it simple.

Our goal continues to be one of providing as many effective automated tools as possible for our Members. We are developing one-click solutions for traffic and lead generation.

In 2010, families with employer-based health insurance saw a 14% average increase in coverage costs compared to 20091. Those who went through their employer’s open-enrollment period at the end of 2010 on ‘auto-pilot’ (without paying careful attention to their choices) may find that their current health plan is simply unaffordable when new rates take effect in January 2011. Others who do have the right health plan for their needs may not know how to best take advantage of their coverage in order to save money over the course of the year.
Five Health Insurance Tips for 2011:

* Don’t get stuck with a lemon. Lots of health insurance companies make changes to rates and benefits at the beginning of the new year. By mid to late January, you may be getting your first taste of what these changes mean for you and your family. If employer-based health insurance is no longer affordable, check with your Human Resources department and get to know your options in the non-group market. Keep in mind, however, that until 2014 you may still be turned down for individual and family coverage due to a pre-existing medical condition.
* Check out new health reform-compliant plans. Health insurance companies are introducing new plans to comply with health reform rules that make some preventive care free and do away with lifetime coverage limits. Some older plans may not have to meet these requirements. If you want to take advantage of new health reform protections, work with a licensed online agent like eHealthInsurance to see what’s available in your state.
* Be sure your old plan still fits. Like old cars or houses, an old health plan can feel pretty comfortable, but that doesn’t mean it’s still a good match for you and your family. If you were married or divorced, had children, or gained or lost income this past year, you may be able to save money on medical costs by starting the year with a plan better suited to your needs.
* Don’t pay two deductibles. Many health insurance plans come with calendar-year deductibles. If you’re planning a move or other life changes in 2011 and know you’ll have to switch health insurance plans mid-year, it may be smarter to find a new plan early. Since certain medical claims are only paid by the insurance company after the deductible is met, moving to a new health insurance plan in January or February may help you avoid paying deductibles twice in a single year.
* Fund your HSA early. If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) and want to get the most out of it, fund it to the maximum amount early in the year. That will allow you to use pre-tax dollars for copayments and deductibles while allowing unused money to collect interest for more of the year. Also, remember that in 2011, HSA (and FSA) funds can no longer be used to pay for most over-the-counter medications.

NOTE: Keep in mind that when you switch plans or apply for a new individual or family health insurance plan, you may be subject to medical underwriting. If you have an individual or family plan and developed medical conditions recently, you may need to stay on that plan to keep your coverage secured.

REVOLUTION OR EVOLUTION - AUTO BUSINESS BUILDER SHAKES UP THE HOME BUSINESS WORLD

Michael Taynor was motivated to succeed in the world of home business. On Social Security disability from an injury sustained during his childhood, Taynor was desperate to come out on top. A Short History of Cigars and Tobacco

Have you ever wondered where cigars were first produced? It is widely believed that cigars were first produced in Spain. But before cigars became all the rage in Europe, tobacco was needed to make them. Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, where native peoples have produced it for hundreds of years. It is believed that the Maya of Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America cultivated tobacco, and even smoked it! Tobacco use spread to other tribes, both north and south. It is believed that its first use in the United States was probably among the tribe along the Mississippi. It wasn't until Christopher Columbus sailed his famous voyage to the Americas in 1492 that the rest of the world came to know tobacco.

It is said that Columbus was not impressed by tobacco or its use among native peoples, but many sailors grew found of the strange plant. Soon it quickly caught on in Spain and Portugal. From there, it spread to France, where the French ambassador Jean Nicot lent his name to the scientific name for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The origins of the word tobacco itself are still suspect, although many believe it is simply a corruption of the word Tobago, which is the name of a Caribbean island. Still others believe it comes from the word Tabasco, a region (and now state) in Mexico.

The first tobacco plantation in the United States was established in Virginia in 1612. More tobacco plantations followed in Maryland soon after. Although tobacco became a popular crop, it was only smoked in pipes. The cigar was not introduced to the United States until the late 18th century. Israel Putnam, an army general who had served in the Revolutionary War, is credited with introducing the cigar to the United States. He had traveled to Cuba after the Revolutionary War and returned with a box of Cuban cigars. Their popularity quickly spread, and soon enough cigar factories were established in the area of Harford, Connecticut, where General Putnam resided.

In Europe, cigar production and consumption did not achieve widespread popularity until after the Peninsula War in the early 19th century. British and French veterans returned to their homelands after years of serving in Spain with their tobacco pipes in tow. Among the rich and fashionable, the favored method of taking tobacco was the cigar. Cigar smoking remains a habit associated with the rich and discriminating of upper society.

EBay Income Possibilities.

If you've ever read an article about eBay, you will have seen the kinds of incomes people make - it isn't unusual to hear of people making thousands of dollars per month on eBay.

Next time you're on eBay, take a look at how many PowerSellers there are: you'll find quite a few. Now consider that every single one of one of them must be making at least $1,000 per month, as that's eBay's requirement for becoming a PowerSeller. Silver PowerSellers make at least $3,000 each month, while Gold PowerSellers make more than $10,000, and the Platinum level is $25,000. The fact that these people exist gives you come idea of the income possibilities here. Most of them never set out to even set up a business on eBay - they simply started selling a few things, and then kept going. There are plenty of people whose full-time job is selling things on eBay, and some of them have been doing it for years now. Can you imagine that? Once they've bought the stock, everything else is pretty much pure profit for these people - they don't need to pay for any business premises, staff, or anything else. There are multi-million pound businesses making less in actual profit than eBay PowerSellers do.

Even if you don't want to quit your job and really go for it, you can still use eBay to make a significant second income. You can pack up orders during the week and take them down to the post office for delivery each Saturday. There are few other things you could be doing with your spare time that have anywhere near that kind of earning potential.

What's more, eBay doesn't care who you are, where you live, or what you look like: some PowerSellers are very old, or very young. Some live out in the middle of nowhere where selling on eBay is one of the few alternatives to farming or being very poor. eBay tears down the barriers to earning that the real world constantly puts up. There's no job interview and no commuting involved - if you can post things, you can do it.

Put it this way: if you know where to get something reasonably cheaply that you could sell, then you can sell it on eBay - and since you can always get discounts for bulk at wholesale, that's not exactly difficult. Buy a job lot of something in-demand cheaply, sell it on eBay, and you're making money already, with no set-up costs.

If you want to dip your toe in the water before you commit to actually buying anything, then you can just sell things that you've got lying around in the house. Search through that cupboard of stuff you never use, and you'll probably find you've got a few hundred dollars' worth of stuff lying around in there! This is the power of eBay: there is always someone who wants what you're selling, whatever it might be, and since they've come looking for you, you don't even need to do anything to get them to buy it.

Remembering 9/11

Nine years ago on September 11th, I watched the events unfold on tv in a hotel in Tempe, Arizona. I had been sent there by Wireless Retail for training. At the time I had the opportunity to start up cell phone kiosks in Sam's Clubs, Walmarts and Kmarts in the Pittsburgh area. During that time I operated eleven locations in two states and managed about thirty five employees. So it was a good time, but I remember planes not flying for a portion of the week. When I returned home by plane on Saturday, well airports have not been the same since.

So, how do you do 'due diligence' anyway?

If you move in entrepreneurial circles like I do, you're
sure to hear two words over and over again: 'due diligence.'

These words refer to the process of scrutiny and
analysis you're supposed to go through before you
invest in any business opportunity.

Sadly, however, the words themselves are far more
known and used than the actual vetting process itself.
People talk about 'due diligence,' but fail to do it.
That is, I think, because they just don't know what
to do. Let's change that right now.

Here are 8 steps you can use the next time you're
thinking of joining any business opportunity of any
kind.

1) What will the company actually share with you?
'Due diligence' is professional analysis. But it can't
work until you have meaningful intelligence to
review. Just what does this company provide? Be
careful when you consider this point because 'more'
doesn't mean 'better.' What you want to know is
how long they've been in business, details about its
leadership (are its executives known and respected?),
the value of its products, its competition and place
in the market,etc.

2) How easy is it to get this useful information?
Where are these data? How easily can you access them?
How clear is the presentation? If you have to jump
through endless hoops getting the details you need
BEFORE you enter the company, imagine how difficult
it will be AFTER!

3) Can you talk to a LIVE person? Lots of so-called
'opportunities' make no effort to understand why
people like you and me need to talk to real people before
plunking down our hard-earned cash. People, in short,
like their questions answered and concerns dealt with
by other people, not just by posted messages. Is a real
person available to you, and just how difficult it is to
reach this person?

4) Are they a Better Business Bureau member? The
BBB is a well-known organization that's in business to
make sure both consumers and businesses get timely
help. All businesses get complaints. The question is
how the company deals with them. A business' file
and overall record at the BBB can be very helpful in
your research. And if the company you're researching
isn't a member? Caveat emptor.

5) Do you understand how money is made in this
opportunity? Every business hires good copywriters
like me who are skilled at exciting prospects. We can
do it in our sleep. That's why you need to get past the
motivating language and see what you actually have
to do to make money. Until you are clear on that, you
shouldn't join ANY opportunity, no matter how wonderful
it seems.

6) Do you have the skills, desire, aptitude and
experience to follow the steps which are necessary
to succeed in the opportunity you're reviewing? This
is closely related to Point 5 above. Don't assume --
whatever the company says -- that anyone can make
money in the opportunity, that you don't need any
particular skills, and that even a child can profit.
Be candid with yourself before so that you don't
lament after.

7) Will anyone help you succeed? The sad fact is,
the average opportunity offers no help beyond a few
printed guidelines. That isn't help; it's lack of help!
Be direct with the company's representative you're
talking to (you are talking to someone, I trust) about
how you get help, the level, frequency, means of
getting it, etc. Everyone needs help; be clear on
how you get it and necessary training from the folks
you are considering joining (and paying).

8) Does what the company say make good sense?
My father used to say there is nothing less common than
common sense. Here, however, is where you need it.
When you look past the hype and marketing promises
(and remember, high-priced marketers like me are
experts in dishing it out), does what the company say
ring true... or are they just making one 'pie-in-the-sky'
promise after another? You need to be cautious,
conservative and thoughtful here to avoid crying
in your beer later.

Conclusion

Lots of folks give nothing more than lip service to
due diligence. Yes, it's necessary, but who has time
in these busy days? The truth is, the amount of time and
effort you expend on your due diligence is a direct
reflection on how serious you are about business success
and any individual opportunity in particular. In short,
it's essential.

Last piece of advice: print out this article and file it
away. It could be well a lot of money and piece of mind
in all your future endeavors!

Got any woodpeckers in your neighborhood?

The next time you see a woodpecker watch him for a while. Think about how the woodpecker spends EVERY DAY of his life. The woodpecker must peck, peck, peck away all day and every day looking for food. It’s a matter of survival. The woodpecker doesn’t peck frantically for a few hours then take the afternoon off to snooze on a comfy branch. The woodpecker doesn’t peck frantically for one week straight to fill his tummy, then take a 2 day break snuggled up in his nest. Instead, he pecks away continually, rain or shine. If he doesn’t find food in one place he is off to the next tree to find a tasty morsel. He doesn’t give up when the first 3 trees have no bugs, throw his wings up in the air and say I quit! The woodpecker knows what you need to know: survival requires continuous pecking. In your case, your success is 100% dependent on your continous pecking strategies for the survival of your business.

In my line of work I talk to marketers, entrepreneurs, and home business operators everyday. Just like in all walks of life you have all kinds of personalities from a variety of background and skills. The backgrounds are diverse but they all bring one thing in common to the table. Essentially a dogma of what they can (or are willing to) do TODAY to build their business.

I am always amazed at how people approach building their home business or business opportunity. Some will bite in like a dog on a bone and go hard for a month, then let go and I never hear from them again. Others study, analyze, learn, listen, think and digest but never get to the part of actually DOING anything. Some will find fault or make the most clever excuses for why they can’t work their business.

Then there are my favorites, I call these people, the woodpeckers.

These are the people that give a 100% effort to building their business EVERY day. Like the woodpecker they peck away at the daily required tasks of building their business to call prospects, promptly reply to email, promote their business, take care of customers, generate leads, build their mailing list, generate traffic, network with others, solve problems as they happen, plan and prepare. If one strategy is not producing results they peck away trying to find a more productive outcome, or they peck at another approach, a new angle, a new offer, a new promotion, or new goals. They are not content to give up. They don’t try and accomplish everything in one day, they work daily, steadily, consistently pecking away to get to their goals. Like the woodpecker they know not to overextend themselves and bite off more of the worm than they can chew. Instead they peck away daily at the necessary tasks being sure to maintain a balance with other important aspects of their life.

The Woodpecker’s attitude is a realistic one, he has to search out food every day to survive and feed himself and his young. No one is going to show up at his nest everyday and hand over the bugs. The wise entrepreneur also has a realistic attitude, he or she may not want to do a certain mundane task but knows it is a requirement of building a successful business. He knows that he or she must do the work to earn the success. For our feathered friend the woodpecker, some days the worms may be juicier than others, sometimes the tasty worms are hard to come by and only the bitter bugs are available. Some months there will be more and larger bugs than other months, but the woodpecker (YOU) will have to just keep on pecking away.

to sell just one or a very few products or services.
This is fine if you want minimum profits, but if

today and brainstorm what other products your
customers will want. Go to Google, and start searching
for additional, related products. At all times, focus
on building, adding, diversifying and expanding
your site and what you sell.

Q: Dr. Lant, we have time for just one more
piece of good advice. What does every home-
based entrepreneur need on their website that
they don't have?

Dr. Lant: In a word, INTERACTIVITY!

The first stage of the 'net was where folks
posted a passive website. That was great at
the time, but time has definitely moved on.
Now your customers want you to give them
superior customer service, not just a 'contact us'
button.

You need to be able to greet your visitors,
answer their questions, make offers, take
orders and build relationships. This can only
be done with interactivity. ALL home-based
entrepreneurs need it, since interactivity
dramatically increases profits.

Life is About Choices and the Decisions We Make

Life is like a road. There are long and short roads; smooth and rocky roads; crooked and straight paths. In our life many roads would come our way as we journey through life. There are roads that lead to a life of single blessedness, marriage, and religious vocation. There are also roads that lead to fame and fortune on one hand, or isolation and poverty on the other. There are roads to happiness as there are roads to sadness, roads towards victory and jubilation, and roads leading to defeat and disappointment.

Just like any road, there are corners, detours, and crossroads in life. Perhaps the most perplexing road that you would encounter is a crossroad. With four roads to choose from and with limited knowledge on where they would go, which road will you take? What is the guarantee that we would choose the right one along the way? Would you take any road, or just stay where you are: in front of a crossroad?

There are no guarantees.

You do not really know where a road will lead you until you take it. There are no guarantees. This is one of the most important things you need to realize about life. Nobody said that choosing to do the right thing all the time would always lead you to happiness. Loving someone with all your heart does not guarantee that it would be returned. Gaining fame and fortune does not guarantee happiness. Accepting a good word from an influential superior to cut your trip short up the career ladder is not always bad, especially if you are highly qualified and competent. There are too many possible outcomes, which your really cannot control. The only thing you have power over is the decisions that you will make, and how you would act and react to different situations.

Wrong decisions are always at hindsight.

Had you known that you were making a wrong decision, would you have gone along with it? Perhaps not, why would you choose a certain path when you know it would get you lost? Why make a certain decision if you knew from the very beginning that it is not the right one. It is only after you have made a decision and reflected on it that you realize its soundness. If the consequences or outcomes are good for you, then you have decided correctly. Otherwise, your decision was wrong.

Take the risk: decide.

Since life offers no guarantee and you would never know that your decision would be wrong until you have made it, then you might as well take the risk and decide. It is definitely better than keeping yourself in limbo. Although it is true that one wrong turn could get you lost, it could also be that such a turn could be an opportunity for an adventure, moreover open more roads. It is all a matter of perspective. You have the choice between being a lost traveler or an accidental tourist of life. But take caution that you do not make decisions haphazardly. Taking risks is not about being careless and stupid. Here are some pointers that could help you choose the best option in the face of life’s crossroads:
· Get as much information as you can about your situation.

You cannot find the confidence to decide when you know so little about what you are faced with. Just like any news reporter, ask the 5 W’s: what, who, when, where, and why. What is the situation? Who are the people involved? When did this happen? Where is this leading? Why are you in this situation? These are just some of the possible questions to ask to know more about your situation. This is important. Oftentimes, the reason for indecision is the lack of information about a situation.

· Identify and create options.

What options do the situation give you? Sometimes the options are few, but sometimes they are numerous. But what do you do when you think that the situation offers no options? This is the time that you create your own. Make your creative mind work. From the most simplistic to the most complicated, entertain all ideas. Do not shoot anything down when an idea comes to your head. Sometimes the most outrageous idea could prove to be the right one in the end. You can ask a friend to help you identify options and even make more options if you encounter some difficulty, but make sure that you make the decision yourself in the end.

· Weigh the pros and cons of every option.

Assess each option by looking at the advantages and disadvantages it offers you. In this way, you get more insights about the consequences of such an option.

· Trust yourself and make that decision.

Now that you have assessed your options, it is now time to trust yourself. Remember that there are no guarantees and wrong decisions are always at hindsight. So choose… decide… believe that you are choosing the best option at this point in time.

Now that you have made a decision, be ready to face its consequences: good and bad. It may take you to a place of promise or to a land of problems. But the important thing is that you have chosen to live your life instead of remaining a bystander or a passive audience to your own life. Whether it is the right decision or not, only time can tell. But do not regret it whatever the outcome. Instead, learn from it and remember that you always have the chance to make better decisions in the future.

Great Entrepreneurs' Secret: Smarts, Guts, and Luck

As venture capitalists, my partners and I meet dozens upon dozens of entrepreneurs pitching their ideas and dreams. We love them - especially when their passion comes with capabilities and a good idea. I have been fascinated in understanding the "DNA" of great entrepreneurs in an effort to identify traits and markers that can serve as early clues for future success. I have come to conclude that great entrepreneurs share and need SGL: Smarts, Guts, and Luck.

Smarts. If you eat horseshoes for breakfast and always win in Vegas, then all the better for you. You ain't the norm. "Smarts" is the best foundation for any entrepreneur. Entrepreneurial smarts, however, needs to be defined and it certainly requires going beyond traditional MBA education. If I were honest, and not influenced by the fact that I hold one of these degrees myself from the institution closely affiliated to this site, then I would say that there's a lot of truth in what my partner Mats Lederhausen has said: "Most MBA's make for sucky entrepreneurs." This is not because they are not smart, but because an MBA--while potentially helpful--is not a requirement. Other smarts are.

The best self-made entrepreneurs possess outstanding street smarts, intuition, emotional and conceptual intelligence as much as--and often more so than--book smarts, analytics, and managerial intelligence. It is why founders are usually very good getting companies to a certain level, but usually less good at scaling their idea. The CEO who scales a company probably did could not have founded the business and, vice versa, the person who founded it probably could not have scaled it. The exceptions of Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Howard Schultz are just that: exceptions. They possessed the rare capability to bridge across the analytical and the creative, across the left and the right side of the brain. For our early stage investments, I am biased toward the right side- the more creative, conceptual and street smarts. "Visionary Skills 101", just does not seem to be on many MBA curriculums.

At the early stage of a business it is critical to build culture before company. The culture comes from the evangelism, heart, and fire in the belly of founders. You need to create a belief system, energy, and inspiration during the early stage of business and, as it grows, balance that with structure and process. If you put the latter (left side thinking) too early you lose the chance to form the soul of the company - you basically begin managing when the company has not yet been led.

Guts. Great entrepreneurs have the guts to go after big ideas. They are willing to put themselves out there when most worry about, "What will others think?" The definition of entrepreneurship that Harvard Business School Professor Bill Sahlman made prolific- "the relentless pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources" forms the center of the entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurs don't worry about the resources they lack, but about the resourcefulness required to get the big idea done.

It's gutsy for people to pursue a mission despite the gulf that exists between their available resources and the largesse of their ideas. It is gutsy to swing for the fences when one could settle for a single or double. It's gutsy to shape change that most cannot yet see and persevere forward with singular clarity. Here's an amazing fact: About two-thirds of billionaires on the Forbes billionaire list started with nothing. Desperation can be a good motivator, but these folks were born with the fire in the belly and vision in the mind. Read the biographies of Andy Grove, Ralph Lauren, or J.K Rowling and you'll find some pretty inspiring stories. As Eleanor Roosevelt stated so eloquently, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

Luck. Even with all the smarts and guts, you don't get the glory without some luck. Requisite elements of fortuitous timing, serendipitous encounters, or inexplicable higher connections come in handy. Yes, people can create the circumstances for luck, but that should not discount the value of Lady Luck's gracious blessings. Recognizing that luck is part of the success formula helps maintain the necessary and important humility during the entrepreneurial journey and beyond. Circumstances beyond one's control will always occur. Accepting this vulnerability and understanding that sometimes you just need the cards dealt in your favor is necessary to maintain the conviction, courage, and momentum of entrepreneurial enterprises. As I think back on the ups and downs of my prior entrepreneurial experiences, I am certainly grateful for my kismet being on the right side more often than wrong.

The central philosophy of my investment firm, Cue Ball, is that human capital trumps everything else out there. We consistently say it is all about the people, and we would take a B business plan with an A team over an A plan with a B team any day. And in that A team, there's likely to be a good triple dose of SGL.

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn't fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn't dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic.

This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can't do this. It's too hard. It's too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.

Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately for the bumble, bee no one has told it so. So fly it does.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you work through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be hard work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, “No pain, no gain”? That is as true as it can be.

So dream on, friend! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

For some time now, we have been wondering, "Why is it that some home business owners experience such fantastic results and others struggle to even get their business off the ground?" We have studied the industry and compiled a short list of major characteristics that determine success.

en·tre·pre·neur [ahn-truh-pruh-nur, -noor] a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.

Fortunately for home-based Internet Entrepreneurs, we can minimize the risk as long as we maximize the initiative. * Consistency – the top people in any field always practice their craft. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Pele did not rise to the top of their respective sports by practicing when they felt like it. Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand did not become megastars by showing up for rehearsals when they were in the mood. They decided what they wanted and consistently worked at it. The same is true with your home business.

* Creativity – thinking outside the box. Expanding one’s mind beyond conventional thinking. There are hundreds of way to build a home business, and who's to say which is the best. The key thing is to always be 'pushing the envelope', learning new techniques, and stimulating your brain. What the mind and conceive and believe, it can achieve.

* Stability – your team is looking to you for guidance. Stabile, consistent leaders can count on a stabile, consistent team. Make decisions based on thorough research, chart a course (plan of action) and then stick with it. Be stabile enough to handle difficult situations during tough times.

* Charisma – defined as a personal quality that gives an individual influence or authority over large numbers of people. All good entrepreneurs/leaders possess a certain magic sparkle in their eye and are able to paint pictures of the future. You can't motivate others (they must do it themselves), but you can certainly inspire them.

* Risk-Taking – a true leader (make no mistake, this business is about leading others) is not afraid of taking chances when opportunity presents itself. Successful entrepreneurs understand that often "You have to go out on a limb to find the best fruit." This doesn't mean jumping into things before you complete your due diligence (like all those 'Get in now before it's too late' emails). Intelligent risk taking also includes thorough research and careful planning.

* Energy – couch potatoes rarely become proficient at anything other than the remote control. Successful home business owners are willing to do whatever it takes to reach to the finish line. They understand that balancing their life is also important, so they must have the energy to drive their business and also spend quality time with family and friends. Working overtime is not uncommon on your way to the top.

The wonderful thing about a home Internet business is it provides a level playing field. Anybody can succeed, as long as they are willing to grow, learn, and do what's necessary. Are you a self-starter? It will be entirely up to you to develop projects, organize your time, and follow through on details.

How well do you get along with different personalities? Business owners need to develop working relationships with a variety of people including customers, vendors, staff, bankers, and professionals such as lawyers, accountants or consultants. Can you deal with a demanding client, an unreliable vendor, or a cranky receptionist if your business interests demand it?

How good are you at making decisions? Small business owners are required to make decisions constantly -- often quickly, independently, and under pressure.

Do you have the physical and emotional stamina to run a business? Business ownership can be exciting, but it's also a lot of work. Can you face six or seven 12-hour work days every week?

How well do you plan and organize? Research indicates that poor planning is responsible for most business failures. Good organization -- of financials, inventory, schedules, and production -- can help you avoid many pitfalls.

Is your drive strong enough? Running a business can wear you down emotionally. Some business owners burn out quickly from having to carry all the responsibility for the success of their business on their own shoulders. Strong motivation will help you survive slowdowns and periods of burnout.

How will the business affect your family? The first few years of business start-up can be hard on family life. It's important for family members to know what to expect and for you to be able to trust that they will support you during this time. Starting a small business is always risky, and the chance of success is slim. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, over 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 95% fail within the first five years.

These figures aren't meant to scare you, but to prepare you for the rocky path ahead. Underestimating the difficulty of starting a business is one of the biggest obstacles entrepreneurs face. However, success can be yours if you are patient, willing to work hard, and take all the necessary steps.

On the Upside

It's true that there are many reasons not to start your own business. But for the right person, the advantages of business ownership far outweigh the risks:

1. You will be your own boss.

2. Hard work and long hours directly benefit you, rather than increasing profits for someone else.

3. Earning and growth potential are far greater.

4. A new venture is as exciting as it is risky.

5. Running a business provides endless challenge and opportunities for learning.

Martin Luther King Day Reflection

My last blog entry was in July 2009. Reflecting on my day off, I have a few things that I would like to share with you.

Last September my wife and I got a chance to visit Atlanta, Ga. We visited Martin Luther King's birth home, neighborhood, church, and The King Center. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the Homewood section of town. I remember when Martin was shot and the resulting riots. Homewood had a busy business section with a GC Murphy's, hardware store, banks, bakery, movie theater and much more. I remember the burning lumber yard near the railroad tracks and the helicopters flying low over the homes in the area.

My father was the district manager, sales manager for the largest black insurance company at the time. My uncle (we all lived together) was a sales person, entrepreneur and later became a state legislator. One of my father's brothers Ed and his wife (Marie) owned Boykin's Bar-B-Que. At one time they had three locations: the Hill, Homewood and Homestead. People still ask me about Boykin's when they hear my name. That was back in the day when wings had three pieces (smile).

I am thankful for those who have gone before me, my culture and experience. The desire to share in the American Dream, equality, own your own business, contribute to the community and the world is alive and well.

I encourage you to step into your calling, the fullness of who you are, strive for excellence and assume your position. We are here to help you be the best you can be.
